So, the time of judgement is upon us and we received a total of 3 C&D (Cease and Desist) letters from FUNimation concerning Kateikyoushi Hitman Reborn!, Soul Eater and D. Gray-Man.

The phenomena that have henceforth occured are listed below:
- The Kateikyoushi Hitman Reborn! Famiglia suddenly found themselves being raided by the Millefiore.
- Excalibur was let loose and took over the Soul Eater team who weren't able to resist.
- The DGM group ran out of Innocence and the Earl was victorious.

So, that's it ^^;

I like Reborn, Buttt i'd rather have my weekly dose of Gintama, and have been putting it off from other subbers, cause i like how you guys sub it best. SO with that being said i'm more happy than sad i just want my gintama dammit! Please!? Maybe...?? You guys are doing a public service by releasing Gintama, it keeps thugs like me off the streets and off drugs, anyhow i look forward to more GINTAMA releases, thank you, have a nice day.

Toriki, I thought you told me you got two DMCA letters for D. Gray-man and Soul Eater...not C&D... There's a difference between C&D and DMCAxD

As for Gintama it shows up in the licensed page in animesuki and in ANN: "BB Watch reports that TV Tokyo will distribute five anime series, including Naruto and Gintama, worldwide on the same day that they broadcast in Japan."
Well Viz and crunchyroll has gotten together
and will provide subs for the five titles.

For those of you who followed Death Note from the beginning of that show... you will have noticed that after one group got a C&D notice... they dropped it but a new group formed to continue it with equivalent quality... All we can hope for now is for a similar event to take place for these three shows as well.

You can't drop soul eater because the rumble version is late night show/uncut version. I don't know what version Funimation have cause I don't live on US.

I couldn't care less about those crappy anime, I just want Gintama. The real problem is if they will do the same for it. Why not taking a different approach, like releasing on IRC(even just the torrents) or on Freenet?

Don't give in. that's what Funi wants you to do. Besides, they never act on those threats. Keep at least Soul Eater alive.
Just look at kaizoku fansubs and dattebayo. They never stopped subbing and they've subbed for ages. No licensing people have shut them down. Just do like Dattebayo does. Put a ban on streaming. That's how funimation found you, tey saw people streaming the show. Don't give in, you are the only ones with quality SE subs.

What if i don't live in the USA? As far as i know licences go for each country, if you subtitle an episode and put that on the net at least all non-licenced watchers can have it "legally", and licenced people can have it on their computer for 24 hours, and if you don't put irect links on your page, no harm done, isn't it? (law system can't really restrain the internet)

I really liked your work so i want you to continue, please, consider.

i am 21 years old, and i find pleasure by watching good quality anime, with good quality picture and good quality subs! i may seem like a geek, but its what i like, and it is being taken away by bitter bastards!

I've been downloading your excellent fan subs in the shadows and without you guys I wouldnt have been introduced to excellent anime such as Gintama, Soul Eater and also TommyHeavenly6.

I appreciate you are continuing with Gintama, I love it but I really love Soul Eater too especially in uncut HD. I can't get enough of it.

Please can you guys not distribute Soul Eater some other way? If it was me I wouldnt give up. I'm not going to watch Soul Eater anywhere else...

2)I always dl SE from Rumbel whenever they're released though I haven't watched them since ep 4.(I plan to have a SE-watching spree)

Ye, there's always gonna be a new fansub group that picks it up, like Lance said: "We understand that we can't stop fansubbing 100%. It's impossible." But if one abuses the letters, they will keep on sending and maybe force to file suit.

i don't get it sometimes, Japan like have anime on their tubes for free, so why can't we!?, fansubbers jus' put cool subtitles in 'em, so us non-Japs can get in on the fun, IMO, Funimation should take care of the streaming sites first, 'cause i think that's where some of the problems lie, rather than slap every known fansubbers with C&D's :(

anyways, thanks for the awesome job RUMBEL it was good while it lasted and keep up the good work ... honestly speaking, i really hope you guys continue with SE *crosses fingers*, no other fansub group does it any better than you guys, look at One Piece it's still on and on ....... :)

Well for the record, there are other groups that sub SE, and DGM, as of right now not too sure about Reborn...I watch all these series, but of course my #1 fav would be (drum roll)...Gintama. Anyhow i'm an impatient person, so when these weekly episodes come out I dl them from any "good" group i can find, until they are later released by the subbing group i like most (that being Rumbel) i then delete other groups ep and keep the rumble ver. (or if it's an anime that rumble does not sub) locked away nice and safe. Currently i'm at a good 1.5 terrabytes of anime on my computer...(and it was Gintama that completed my life) anyhow point is, there are other groups that SE and DGM that are good as well, maybe not Rumbel good, (I won't list any of their names on here, but they exist, just look around) but good none the less. Plus i think rumbel will think of something anyway we just have to be patient...Anyhow...from when i last checked, japan is up to ep134 in Gintama, and we're up to 89 subbed ver. Man, that's alot of episodes, and I can't wait to see em all nice and subbed by Rumbel...can't wait =)

There are so many country servers where they can't do nothing but only shut up, or torrent sites as scarywater or others, so is only your choice what do now.
For me FUNimation can go to hell, i'm not on usa so they can to the hell with their online laws, so continue normally, change on another country servers or torrent sites or post the link for the raw and release only the script so they can send their C&D mails to the trash.
When is licensed on europe they need only to shut up and go to hell, change on another country server or the next time they want gintama too.
Now all online servers are usa propriety... yeah on their dreams.

@Karurura: You're right. I'm from Bulgaria, tiny little country, which that "FUNimation" or whatever maybe never heard of. Our online sites for videos are full of anime episodes, the trackers too and no one says a thing, because bulgarian government or bulgarian laws, WHATEVER doesn't care about anime since it's not very popular in here. Everything is peaceful, and not only for the animes, but movies, games, you can find everything here... It's kind of scary ^^'
So basically, a torrent site of some small, unpopular country may be the solution, as Karurura just said.

please o please let this be a lie. I cant watch SE without Rumbel. This is the only show i have not cheated against with raws or youtube. please I beg you, continue the work, change the torrent locations. do something to survive. You can't just accept a death sentence without fighting for your life. Technically i am not in the US, and technically i am. But here we don't care about such matters. We even find us shows online and the lawmakers can't stop them. Please keep going *drops to his bruised knees* I don't know of any group that even compares to you. Please escape the trap and continue the broadcast. If you don't, everything you stood for as a fansub group of SE would have been for nothing. I was even looking forward to the awesome karaoke of the new OP..... Don't give up or give in. Become like gods and surpass the rules...I know you can do it....(thanks for the subs so far, truly)

Sad news. You guys were the best group working on Soul Eater. All the experienced groups got killed by C&Ds.

Are the partially completed episodes going to be scrapped or is there going to be at least one more release (Episode 29 is at 87%). Not expecting you guys to take the risk now that the companies with expensive lawyers have you in their radar but I'm just wondering.

Ah, that's a shame. Rumbel is the only group I followed for Soul Eater. Still, if you've received a C&D, there's nothing you can do about it. Thanks for all the time and effort you've put into all three series! They will be missed. We'll continue to look forward to your work on Gintama!

Well it was fun while it lasted. Rumbel was the site that introduced me to Soul Eater and got me hooked. I hope you can continue with Gintama as it's definitly one of my favorites and I love your subs.

Those of you saying Soul Eater is licensed by Funimation, it is not. This is what the letter said: "Though these series have not been licensed to a local distributor in North America, it is important to note that the rights owned by Japanese producers are still applicable, and enforceable, worldwide... On behalf of Media Factory."
It's risky to continue when you already got the letter, but there's always going to be new groups subbing SE...

Funimation,i wish you go BANKRUPT in the ways of the economic crisis in the USA!!!!Geez, they have a knack for annoying people.Soul Eater is my favorite anime since the first time 1 saw it. I started with Rumbel and intended to finish with Rumbel also. Funimation really sucks.Not only they do not have the license for America but I'm sure should they acquire it, it'll take forever to catch up to episode 28 on par with Rumbel's HD quality. Crunchyroll is en eyesore as is youtube.I've gotten used to the 720p resolution.Grrrr,i'll have to evacuate all my fury and frustration somehow otherwise I'll break something.

Fansubs are way above the lot when compared with official releases of dvd companies.They do not keep the feeling of the show as in the Japanese version,e.g soul-kun may become Mr soul,shinigami-sama may become lord grim-reaper.The opening and ending may also change,replacing them with ugly English songs with no karaoke effects at all. Their dub are horrible and their subtitles are ugly, i hate those yellow fonts intruding into the video.Fansubs are better because the people subbing it are doing this out of passion and commitment for the show and other fans. Thus they put more attention to small details that would appeal to fans. However people from the likes of Funimation are doing it for profit and are being paid to do that,being mtivated only by money!!They don't care for us.That's why their releases suck.

In Mauritius where I live, there's practically no anime dvds sold and no anime shown on TV.My only way of satisfying my craving for anime is by watching fansubs, not to say here the maximum downloading rate we get is 30 kbps which is real crap. So you can imagine the pain it is to download the HD episodes but still i do it.

Anyways,toriki,is it definitely dropped or there's a chance you'll pick it up later if Funimation doesn't get the license officially?

Rumbel is the best subbers for soul eater,paying particular attention to small details, accurate translation and by far the best karaoke effects(similar to those of Menclave).A big thank you for your work on this show.

Another question is intriguing. If toriki and the soul eater staff are not residing in th USA and distributing it from a country where it is not licensed, would you be free from funimation's rule??One solution may be let the soul eater staff do their work and make a faithful Rumbel member distribute them from a country where it's unlicensed!

I registered just to say thanks for the Soul Eater episodes so far.. I can see that you guys really put a lot of effort in subbing the series.. Hopefully, as you said, there will be a new group that subs SE as good as you guys.. Arigatou gozaimasu !!

i really wouldn't mind buyin' original DVD's, i collect the animes i love to watch (a big part of this is 'cause of the awesome job done by talented fansub groups) and quality-wise, it's awesome! ... but IMHO, FUNimation should jus' hire you guys at RUMBEL and do the official subbing of SE instead of them, every anime fan knows how sucky their works are compared to you guys (and many other talented fansub groups) ... i'm jus' suggestin' though :)

... or you guys could jus' do what laughing_man says lol! :P

They hate that you use eng sub and encode it because is their business.
But our dears americans' morons don't know that the eng language isn't their property same for the europe and others country servers; so change something, kick their ass and continue.
I'm an ex-timer and i did it for licensed things too so is only a your choice continue(changing a bit of things) or not, probably ppl here donate you money for buy a new servers too, so is up to you. (If you don't want problem for D.Gray release a batch with all the last episodes and after you've finished)

If I could have watched the entire series subbed by Rumbel, I would have went out and bought the original DVD's. Now I'm not going to. Ever. I'll find another group subbing this show and refuse to support Un-Funimation, just because of this.

Some companies tend to completely ignore the fact that even though many of us watch fansubs, if we like what we see we WILL go and buy the official DVD releases. Just because fansubs exist doesn't mean EVERYONE completely neglects the official releases. If anything, it helps us select what we like and what we don't, and make smarter buying decisions. I will NEVER purchase a series I've never seen, because if I end up with a bad apple, I'm down money. But I WILL purchase something I have seen through to the end and would like to own.

Way to lose more money, Funimation. You would be surprised how many others think the way I do, we're probably the majority, even though you might not think so.

I remember when Shinsen continued with Darker Than BLACK, they changed their name to "Syndicate" and released on Tokyo Toshokan, with no link to any sort of website. They were impossible to contact (under their new alias anyway), and even though the fonts and the opening karaoke were obviously the same, that's not enough proof to prove it was the same group. I can't be proved without a shadow of a doubt, as anyone could make similar looking karaoke or effects, or Shinsen could have made them public for all anyone knew (but well all know that wasn't the case). The point was no one could prove it was them enough to be able to continue with legal action after the C&D.

You guys could do something similar and also be guaranteed not to get caught or have anything happen to you, but it's up to you. Thanks for what you've given us so far, much appreciated, and I look forward to sticking with you for Gintama!

P.S. - Tadashi made their scripts available, and I've gone through and QC'd them myself fixing typos/name consistency issues, and I've encoded the audio to vorbis to match Rumbel, and used their fonts, but not their name. I might release on Toshokan soon under some alias, but I might not. If a few weeks pass and nothing comes of Soul Eater from other groups, I might just do it though.

For me Gintama is enough(and this is because i'm here, if rumble one day stop it, licensed or not, probably 80% of ppl go away), but i thinks that when someone start a thing is better continue it, however is the group choice continue or not. (SE i find it with the sub of my language; same for D.Gray; and for Reborn i go for the Phantom-Subs episodes now).
All we know that there are many ways for continue a licensed series, so only if someone don't want little problems decide to stop.

Rumbel's karaoke for the second ending was really amazing. from the looks of it,it appears to have required a lot of effort from you guys and it was really hard to make. I doubt Funimation would go to the lengths of making something like that. That shinigami head was really cool. Hommage and tribute to you!!


By the way,I was thinking of some possible solutions to get our fix of high-quality release of Soul Eater and I came with these:
1)Let's make a Facebook group to show our support to Rumbel and flame Funimation.Everyone here can join then!!

2)If Rumbel is on good terms with groups like Ureshii and Menclave,maybe Rumbel Staff can contact them and ask them if they want to continue the series from episode 29 and onwards.Their policy regarding karaoke and quality are about the same!

I will not watch episode 29 and onwards unless a well-known group picks it up as having benn used to Rumbel,it will spoil my enjoyment for the show!!Take care, pals

Who licensed Gintama? Also when anime is licensed, isn't it licensed by seasons? If that's the case as long as we stay as close to the japanese releases won't that keep us safe from pricks like funimation...how is it that naruto and bleach is still being subbed with no legal action taken against the groups that sub them, someone bestow some knowledge on me about this. naruto and bleach were licensed by VIZ media, and as far as we know (according to Dattebayo), they agreed that fansubbing would be allowed since VIZ can't sub and release it exactly 1 day after it airs in japan, and also, they are doing the fans a favor and at the same time, not making them hate them for licensing those shows

Commander Bar if you enjoy comedy, Gintama is by far the funniest anime I have ever seen. The plot is little wacky and some people think the first few episodes arent as funny, but so many episodes I am just roaring with laughter.

I probably have over-hyped it, but I can't recommend it enough. On top of that, Rumbel has done an excellent job with quality subs and translation notes.

Also, sub more Gintama indeed! There are so many episodes left to be subbed, and I can't wait to see the next arc involving the Kiheitai with proper subs (cr fan fansubs just doesn't cut it for me).
I am a bit sad about the DGM thing, but I'm certain other groups will sub it, like Shinsen - unless they got a C&D mail aswell.

FUNimation and Bandai are really starting to piss me off these days, but as long as I can have my fix of Gintama, I'll be alright. Naruto and such are better read than watched anyway.

Seriously, guys, those shows are property of FUNimation, and it's in their right to stop independent groups from using their material and releasing it to the public. I find it ridiculous that people whine about the company that made the anime. After all, it's thanks to them that you got to watch those anime shows. I mean, I liked Rumbel's Soul Eater releases, but come on, if you made music, movies, art, and released it commercially, would you like to have people download it illegally? It's basically the same.

That said, I'd like to thank the people here at Rumbel who wasted their time giving people they don't even know some quality subtitled anime shows for free.

i think u'll find they just licensed it so that they can butcher the show in a dub. Dub voice actors of anime are basically just spitting on the original voice actors work and these companies that license anime for dubbing support that.. so who cares if they "own" it in any way.

Sure fansubbing is wrong if there is a good subtitled version out within a reasonable time frame from the company who made it etc but these assholes who license it to dub shouldnt stop fansubbers

I want to mention that a good portion of the staff did not "migrate" to Gintama. So it's not that we aren't working faster even though we lost two animes to sub, it's that Gintama didn't receive as many staff members on the project from the C&D's as you think.

For God's sake, how dense are you? Rumbel staff decided to comply to the C & D they received, respect that, stop whining and get over it. There are other group subbing these shows, they may not be on the same level as Rumbel is, but in the end all that counts is you'll still be able to watch the original version of these show, shortly after they're broadcast in japan, and with subs to help you understand what it is they're saying, seriously, what more can you ask? Perhaps some other group will take up Rumbel mantle of bringing us quality subbing of the late night version of soul eater, perhaps some other group already has, but you should still respect Rumbel decision by not advertising subbing of a show they decided to drop.

Whether or not this other group is Rumbel or not, I think it would be unwise to parade it around. If it is not, Rumbel could get in trouble for continuing to sub even though they got slapped with a C&D; even if it isn't them. If it is them, they're obviously circumventing the C&D by changing their name, and would probably like to not be pegged again.

That said, the group's work is very nice, and I would recommend it over the other groups I tried (Engrish, bad timing, low quality... Oi).

You guys do know that if in a *theoretical* situation that Rumbel decided to keep subbing Soul Eater under a new alias, by posting comments about it here you would be exposing them and therefore potentially getting them into deep shit right?

As I said, in a *theoretical* situation, I'm not saying they are doing it. After all, the company that sent out the C&Ds is very likely monitoring the websites of the fansubbers they sent C&D's to. Please take the hint and let's all just STFU about all this. Whatever "exciting" news you have to report is most likely already general knowledge now. Don't ruin it.

Anyway, even though you dropped Soul Eater, Rumbel, thanks a lot for your past work, and I'm looking forward to more Gintama awesomeness!

lol, sorry but I can't thank a group who has dropped an anime I was watching.

There are many ways to get past C&D's, tons of groups out there have received many of them and are still going like nothing. How many do you think Dattebayo has gotten?

Most anime fans don't even bother to learn what a C&D is because they just don't care, they just want to watch their stuff, period.

Seriously, guys, those shows are property of FUNimation, and it's in their right to stop independent groups from using their material and releasing it to the public. I find it ridiculous that people whine about the company that made the anime.

Actually, in short words, Funimation actually doesn't have the right to stop Hitman, they don't own it nor is it licensed to them. In other words they do have their eye on it apparently to gain it, they don't have it yet.
